Is there any way to update the E8a firmware?

Latest Updated:01/16/2012

Question:

I am using the same E8a to debug as well as to write to the flash memory for an MCU stand-alone evaluation. When debugging, I connect E8a to the High-performance Embedded Workshop and for MCU stand-alone evaluation, I connect E8a to the Flash Development Toolkit to write to the flash memory.

I have to update the E8a firmware every time I connect it to the Flash Development Toolkit to switch to the flash write operation after debug, and vice versa for the High-performance Embedded Workshop. Is there any way to work around this?

Answer:

Because the E8a firmware required for the High-performance Embedded Workshop and the Flash Development Toolkit differs, the update is necessary each time you switch. Try one of the following methods to reduce the number of firmware updates.

  1. Rather than using the Flash Development Toolkit for temporary MCU stand-alone evaluation, write to the flash memory with the High-performance Embedded Workshop. In the [Emulator setting] dialog displayed in the High-performance Embedded Workshop when the E8a is connected, select [Flash memory data write] mode, and write to the flash memory.

This mode enables the user to write to the flash memory in the same method as when using the Flash Development Toolkit.

  2. Use two E8a emulators, one dedicated for debugging with the High-performance Embedded Workshop, and one dedicated for flash memory write operations with the Flash Development Toolkit.
